Access to justice is a vital human right, yet it is widely undermined.
The stark reality is that even humanity’s greatest legal protections are meaningless without the means to pay for them.
Article 8 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) states: “Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law.”
We witness how governments abuse their power — imposing taxes and erecting excessive financial barriers for citizens seeking their day in court, especially against the state itself. This is a prime example of how economic hardship is used to deprive people of the very rights the Declaration guarantees.
Globally, pro bono legal assistance remains in its infancy and is inaccessible to most of the public.
The Fund is committed to providing an effective legal remedy against this systemic injustice. We believe a person’s chance at justice should not depend on being born into wealth, but is a comfort and a right entitled to all from birth.
